Nutrient Density Unmatched!
Don't delay making my foamy blue drank, Spirulostrum, to unlock potent health benefits.
There are two superfoods that have tremendous health benefits to highlight:
Spirulina
As someone who is pescetarian — mostly plant-based, but will eat fish — I am always looking to add more protein to my diet. Spirulina is a protein-forward plant source that packs a punch!
Colostrum
I’m not gonna lie…I was turned on to colostrum last year as a result of the social media marketing surge that Armra Colostrum had. It hooked me with its promise of improving everything from gut-skin barrier to immunity and even hair/skin/nails/etc. While it is a pricey product, I do have to commend colostrum for its immunity defense. I credit the fact that I don’t often, if ever, get sick to my daily scoop!
So let’s get into it, and I’ll finish with my favorite way to consume both products.
Spirulina
Spirulina, most typically cultivated in pond and lake water, is a blue-green micro-algae that is packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals. It can be consumed in pill or powder form but it is considered a food, superfood at that! According to healthline.com, here are the top ten reasons to start your intake of spirulina yesterday.
Nutrient Powerhouse
Here are the top nutrients that make up just 1 TB of spirulina:
Protein: 4 g
Thiamin: 14% of the Daily Value (DV)
Riboflavin: 20% of the DV
Niacin: 6% of the DV
Copper: 47% of the DV
Iron: 11% of the DV
Antioxidant-Rich + Anti-inflammatory
The phycocyanin in spirulina is what gives it that vibrant blue-green color. (Side note: It makes an excellent alternative to toxic blue food dyes). This component combats oxidative stress in the body and promotes antioxidant absorption.
Lowers Bad Cholesterol
Although there has been a lot of research out there lately that challenges the former demonization of cholesterol, it is hard to argue that high cholesterol doesn’t contribute to heart disease, which continues to be the leading cause of death in our country. Therefore, the fact that spirulina has been proven to lower triglycerides and improve cholesterol levels in the body can’t be a bad thing!
Decreases Likelihood of Disease and Muscle Damage
Peroxidation in the body contributes to degradation of muscles and ultimately leads to serious disease. The antioxidative properties in spirulina have been proven to decrease peroxidative stress on the body.
Anti-Cancer Properties
Although the research in this area is in the early stages, some animal studies have suggested the spirulina is effective in reducing the size of tumors.
Blood Pressure Lowering
There is evidence that spirulina adds nitric oxide to the body which signals blood vessels to relax, lowering blood pressure.
Naturally Treats Allergies
Spirulina has been found effective in treating allergic reactions and has even been noted as more impactful than some OTC anti-histamines.
Increases Iron Levels
For those who are at risk of anemia, daily intake of spirulina is shown to increase iron levels, especially in pregnant women and children.
Improves Athletic Performance
As mentioned, spirulina helps to fight oxidative damage in the body. This leads to decreased muscle fatigue, faster recovery and overall improved athletic performance so you can compete at your strongest!
Controls Blood Sugar
There is early-stage research being done on the overall impact spirulina has on controlling fasting blood sugar levels in those with type 2 diabetes.
Bovine Colostrum
Packed with antibodies, growth factors and proteins, bovine colostrum is the milk that comes from cows in the first few days after giving birth. Most recently, it has boomed in the wellness industry due to increased marketing from influencers on social media platforms. This powdered supplement has been touted as ‘liquid gold,’ and I have to admit, I do agree that its golden qualities include:
Strengthening Immunity
I know that ever since starting to take colostrum daily (0.5-1 tsp), I have not gotten sick. The cytokines, immunoglobulins and enzymes active in the powder work wonders in bolstering the immune system — a Godsend during flu season!
Muscle Repair
The insulin-like properties in colostrum have been noted to increase the speed of muscle recovery leading to overall athletic triumph.
Improved Gut Health
Lately, many people are learning quickly that symptoms they have been suffering from are a result of gut problems. Such symptoms include gastrointestinal issues, skin problems like eczema and acne, bloating and more. Colostrum has been celebrated for its ability to boost gut-health.
Check out my favorite way to consume Spirulostrum …
Blend filtered water with a scoop of spirulina, a scoop of colostrum, splash of coconut water and splash of apple cider vinegar.
